“Up in the garden, I stand and plan - my hands full of seeds and my head full of dreams.” - Kate Messner

As I’m writing this, I’m mentally planning out which plants I still need to search for at our local garden center. I am by no means a great gardener. I’m an aspiring gardener who loves the idea of plants but is not detail-oriented enough to make each type of plant happy. I lean towards easy-to-care-for flowers and herbs in pots, perennial natives that don’t require me to attend to, and non-fussy fruits and vegetables. In all honesty, I’m a great farmer’s market customer…

I love the first line of the featured book this week: “Up in the garden, I stand and plan - my hands full of seeds and my head full of dreams.” That’s the excitement of gardening to me: the possibilities!

Read:

Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” by Kate Messner and illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal shows us two parallel experiences of gardening: those of the gardeners and those of the natural animals and processes that help support the lives we’re hoping to grow.

Have you planned your garden yet? Or perhaps you’ve had it planned for months and already have the first spring produce popping up. Even if it’s just a cherry tomato plant or some basil in a pot, challenge yourself to plant something for yourself this year!
