Take Action

What does Martin Luther King, Jr. Day mean to you?

It’s a holiday we know, a holiday we may think about, but what does it actually mean to you?

Growing up, I learned that MLK Jr. had a dream. A dream about equality for all. He marched and he spoke. And he was persecuted and killed for his dreams.

During these lessons, I don’t remember ever being encouraged to ACT. But when I think of MLK Jr. Day now, that’s the word that comes to mind.

He didn’t just have a dream - that speech was him acting on that dream and inspiring others to do the same.

He didn’t just march - he inspired others to do the same.

He didn’t just speak up - he inspired others to do the same.

And nowhere in his teachings did he have restrictions on age, gender, race, ethnicity, gender identity or any of our other characteristics.

For me, MLK Jr. Day is about defining what is just, what is right, what is human - and acting on it. Not sure where to start?

  • Educate yourself. Look up books on inclusivity, equality, BLM, environmental justice, or any other topic which sparks your passion for making the world a better place. Some kid-book-oriented people I follow on IG include @thebookwrangler and @hereweread.

  • Share what you learn. Everyone is learning. Deeper thinking happens through discussion of ideas.

  • Listen. We all have different backgrounds and spaces in life. Take the time to hear the perspective of others - with an open and patient mind - and Reflect on that knowledge to evaluate your thoughts.

  • Act. No matter your age, there are actions you can take to fight for what you believe is right in the world. If you’re hesitant to post on social media, I get it. But that’s not the only avenue:

    • Write or call your elected officials.

    • Volunteer with a community organization.

    • Let your actions speak - how you talk and treat others is what kids (and adults) see most.

    • Use your particular gifts to give back.

How will you act today? How will you make a difference?
